Our Focus:

  • This NIDA T32 fellowship emphasizes research training in neurocognitive and everyday functioning outcomes (e.g., medication adherence, driving, technology-based tools for assessing and remediating neurocognitive, substance use, and functional impairment) in addictions among people with HIV. Substances of interest include, but are not limited to, methamphetamine, cannabis, alcohol, and opioids.
  • Research opportunities exist for candidates with multiple disciplinary backgrounds to examine varied neurobiological mechanisms (e.g., microbiome and gut-brain axis, inflammation, neuroimmunology, epigenetics) underlying neurobehavior and its everyday functioning outcomes.
  • Depending on the fellow’s interests, additional research opportunities may be available in understanding addictions and neuroHIV in the context of resource-limited and underserved settings, and additional comorbidities/cofactors (e.g., mental illness, aging, vascular disease).
  • Trainees have access to extensive, multidisciplinary longitudinal neuroHIV and substance use data from our centers (e.g., HIV Neurobehavioral Research Center, the California NeuroHIV Tissue Network, the Center for Medicinal Cannabis Research).
  • Fellows will engage in an individualized, mentored clinical research training program that will include structured didactics from a highly collaborative faculty of clinical and basic scientists.  The T32 Program Executive Committee includes Program Directors Drs. David Moore (contact) and Jennifer Iudicello, Co-Director Dr. Igor Grant and Associate Director Dr. Jessica Montoya. For a full list of faculty mentors, please visit the TRAIN website.
