Summary Abstract:
A critical examination of the history of neuropsychology provides us with a theoretical framework to critically evaluate our current work while providing us with a basis to move ahead in the future. Important influences on development of neuropsychology and much of the testing methodology currently used in clinical practice come from the intelligence testing movement, U.S. immigration, and demands initiated by the great wars (WWI & WWII). The origins of many of these tests and measures can be linked to early work performed in New York City, which is this conference’s host location. The symposium will include presentations on New York’s contributions to the history of neuropsychology and on the development of clinical neuropsychology as a professional discipline. Recognizing the global influence of our field there will be a presentation on the historical development of neuropsychology in Greece. The symposium will conclude with historical reviews on the development and use of the Wada Test in addition to a presentation on historical approaches to agnosia. The symposium will review scientific and social trends that have contributed to the development of modern-day neuropsychology and how our understanding of the history of our field can help us adapt to changes in health-care reimbursement, new areas of practice, application to diverse populations, and a continued movement towards the use of digital methodology.
