Symposia 4: History of Neuropsychology: Prior Steps & Future Directions
Simposium #5
History of Agnosia
Russell Bauer, University of Florida, Gainesville, United States
Category: Visuospatial Functions/Neglect/Agnosia
Keyword 1: agnosia
Keyword 2: visuospatial functions
Objective:
This presentation will illustrate how historical conceptualizations of a fascinating class of clinical disorders, the agnosias, has evolved and been shaped by the scientific zeitgeist prevailing at the time that new findings and new patients were discovered. Classic conceptualizations of these disorders as reflecting loss of specialized processors for objects, faces, and spatial relationships have given way to more systems-level analyses based on disconnection, cognitive neuropsychological, and computational models. The evolution of thought in this area serves as a potent example of how clinical findings can inspire experimental neuroscience and imaging analyses and how results from experimental investigations can, in turn, lead to advances in clinical assessment. Thus, the lessons learned from this body of work thus provide a good example of clinical translational science in action.
