Simposium #2

Historical Origins of Professional Neuropsychology Organizations & Training in North America

Linas Bieliauskas, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, United States

Category: Other

Keyword 1: planning

Objective:

The development of clinical neuropsychology as a profession in North America originated from the contributions of multiple disciplines within experimental laboratories scattered across the continent. In the early days, professional organizations tended to focus on the subject matter of the nascent field, regardless of discipline or geography of the members. As the practice of clinical neuropsychology emerged, training, education and clinical practice issues became more of a focus across the continent. In the mid-1970s several organizations were established that sought to meet the needs of those practicing neuropsychology. As the profession rapidly expanded, greater standardization was needed to address the varying backgrounds of training and education. To this end, clinical neuropsychology as a professional practice continues to evolve and incorporate into training advancements in technology, healthcare service delivery (e.g., interdisciplinary teams), and ability to serve a diverse population.
