New2Neuropsychology (N2N): Increasing Recruitment of Historically Underrepresented College Students to Neuropsychology
Taylor Schmitt, PhD, University of Michigan – Michigan Medicine Department of Psychiatry, Ann Arbor, MIObjective:
To describe the development, activities, and impact of New2Neuropsychology (N2N) for increasing recruitment of historically underrepresented minoritized(URM) college students to neuropsychology.
N2N is an initiative that was established in 2021 aiming to facilitate greater equity and inclusion in neuropsychology through outreach to URM college students and partnerships with minority serving institutions, community colleges, universities, and neuropsychology organizations. N2N is comprised of an administrative team, advisory board, and four committees. Across committees and partnerships, N2N provides students with practical resources like scholarships and textbooks. Within the Outreach Program Committee, N2N hosts presentations for URM students and increases exposure to URM neuropsychologists and trainees. The Student Engagement Committee hosts networking events, connects with students on social media, and facilitates warm hand-offs for students through brief 1:1 meetings. The Resource Development Committee produces accessible digital content to demystify the process of becoming a neuropsychologist, e.g., with newsletters, infographics, and videos on the N2N website. Last, the Program Evaluation Committee collects and analyzes N2N impact and outcomes data to identify areas of growth, program changes, and inform future goals for N2N. For example, data from 90 pre- and post-presentation surveys was compared to assess changes in students’ self-reported understanding about neuropsychology and the training pathway.
To date, N2N has partnered with 19 colleges and universities across the United States, Canada, and Australia, hosted 16 presentations and 4 networking events, donated over 120 books, and developed a website and social media presence with extensive, curated resources for URM students. Together with the AACN Relevance 2050 Student Pipeline Subcommittee, N2N has also awarded over $30,000 in conference travel and graduate school application scholarships for URM students. Mixed ANOVAs comparing pre- and post-presentation survey data showed that students attending N2N presentations reported increased understanding of what neuropsychology is, what neuropsychologists do, and the steps required to become a neuropsychologist(ps<.001, Cohen’s d=0.94, 1.38, and 1.73, respectively).
N2N has shown success increasing exposure to and knowledge about neuropsychology forURM students. Future directions include refining targeted methods to reach URM students, expanding the accessibility of N2N resources across diverse groups, increasing global student engagement, and examining the initiative’s long-term impact (e.g., actual recruitment to neuropsychology training programs).
