The BAND-Together Initiative: Perspective of the Clinical Research Coordinator

Lilly Mason, Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, United States

Category: Inclusion and Diversity/Multiculturalism

Keyword 1: inclusion
Keyword 2: dementia - Alzheimer's disease

Objective:

Prior research has identified barriers to improving equitable care and research representation (mistrust, lack of access to Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias education, financial insecurity, fear of adverse side effects, reputation of researcher & researcher institution). The primary motivations of phase 1 (launched in June of 2022) of the BAND-Together initiative include building trust to facilitate lasting relationships between doctors/researchers and the Black American community, growing the BAND-Together initiative, and improving health literacy and openness to research. The BAND-Together investigative team is comprised of clinicians, researchers, community collaborators, community key stakeholders, and a clinical research coordinator. This presentation provides the perspective of the BAND-Together clinical research coordinator with particular focus on navigating IRB submissions, communicating with researchers, clinicians, and community partners, management of grassroots social media platforms, and tips on managing community engaged research projects. The BAND-Together team overcame hurdles including working with IRB staff unfamiliar with community engaged research methods, use of institutional logos, and recruitment methods.
