The Relationship Between COVID-19 and Neurodegenerative Disease
Catherine Widmann, University of Bonn, Bonn, Germany
Category: Neurodegenerative Disorders
Keyword 1: cognitive functioning
Keyword 2: dementia - Alzheimer's disease
Keyword 3: dementia - subcortical
Objective:
A disconcerting linkage between the SARS-CoV-2 virus and neurodegenerative disorders has surfaced. This lecture aims to furnish a comprehensive and scientifically rigorous exploration of the intricate relationship between COVID-19 and neurodegenerative diseases. It delves into various dimensions, ranging from biological underpinnings to neuropsychological implications, as well as societal and caregiving aspects, situating the discussion within the context of contemporary research trends.
Participants and Methods:
The lecture will examine the potential connections of post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 (PASC) to Alzheimer's disease. The unique impact of COVID-19 on individuals with pre-existing dementia conditions is characterized, and the evidence demonstrating the heightened risks of dementia during the pandemic will be presented.
Results:
The most recent findings concerning the onset of new onset neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, post-SARS-CoV-2 infection will be summarized. The specific ramifications for older adults and society as a whole will be discussed. The lecture will culminate in a synthesis of the relationship between Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and COVID-19, placing particular emphasis on causation and preventative strategies. Particular focus will be given to the associations between medications and mortality rates. Long-term cognitive impairment and disruptions in care will also be considered.
Conclusions:
The relationships between COVID-19 and neurodegenerative disorders is complex, spanning from biological foundations to cognitive, psychological, and broader societal concerns. Recommendations for future research and broader caregiving considerations for dementia patients in institutional settings will be discussed.
