Objective:

Building trust through community engagement is critical in working with underserved and historically neglected populations with disproportionate health disparities. Our BAND-Together project has had great success reaching members of the Black American community through a faith-based partnership. The study aims were both focused and flexible. Aim 1 was to establish the BAND-Together initiative to qualitatively examine barriers and needs in the aging Black American community. Aim 2 was to develop BAND-Together community-informed and co-led ADRD curriculum. Outcomes thus far include focus group data collection/analysis, launch of BAND-Together dementia 101 lunch & learn educational series, established electronic modes of communication, established a community advisory board, streamlined registry consenting procedures, submission of a proposal to support a ADRD community engaged research fellow, and submission of proposals launch BAND-Together translational and basic science research. Focus groups were mainly comprised of caregivers and family members. We learned from participants that there was a spectrum of knowledge on ADRD symptoms, differences in sources of information accessed, fears of getting dementia early in life, and need for resources. Qualitative themes identified to build an ADRD educational program included understanding causes of dementia, interest in learning about available community resources, natural treatments and treatment side effects, influence of diet and lifestyle habits on brain health, and coping with dementia behavioral changes. We learned that many caregivers are open to research participation but had concerns about their elderly loved ones abilities to participate in research. These qualitative data informed ADRD lunch & learn topics and informed our future project ideas. The current presentation will provide an overview of the BAND-Together initiative research methods, summary of qualitative data from focus groups and ADRD educational series, and future directions.
