Exploring the Impact of Neuropsychiatric Symptoms on Quality of Life in Women with Parkinson's Disease

Julia Thomas, Barrow Neurological Institute, Phoenix, United States

Category: Movement and Movement Disorders

Keyword 1: Parkinson's disease
Keyword 2: quality of life

Objective:

It is important to evaluate and treat neuropsychiatric conditions in Parkinson’s disease (PD) given their high prevalence and impact on disability, quality of life (QoL), caregiver burden, and financial costs. Perhaps even more importantly, a clearer understanding is needed of how neuropsychiatric symptoms affect QoL in patient subgroups so that patient care and QoL can be optimized. There is a paucity of research focusing on the experiences of women with PD and the small sample studies of gender differences have yielded inconsistent findings with respect to prevalence, neuropsychiatric conditions such as apathy, and QoL (Baba et al., 2005; Georgiev et al., 2017; Lubomski et al., 2014). The current study sought confirmation of the hypothesis that apathy negatively impacts QoL above and beyond the impact of age, disease stage, and depression/anxiety in a sample of women with PD.
