Sex and Brain Injury

Maheen Adamson, VA Palo Alto Health Care System, Palo Alto, United States
Stacy Moeder, VA Palo Alto Health Care System, Palo Alto, United States

Category: Acquired Brain Injury (TBI/Cerebrovascular Injury & Disease - Adult)

Keyword 1: traumatic brain injury

Objective:

his research addresses the significance of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), Post-Traumatic Stress (PTS), and other exposure-related traumas in the veteran population, especially focusing on female veterans. Furthermore, the research aims to shed light on the distinct experiences and risks associated with women compared to men, and to introduce insights from the rapidly growing field of Women's Neurology.

Participants and Methods:

Research on women comprising approximately 40% of the general US population experiencing TBI-related medical emergencies. A comparative study of females vs. males, focusing on hormone fluctuations and associated symptoms. Examination of women with TBI, their reported symptoms, and neurological effects post-injury. Introduction to Women's Neurology, emphasizing the influence of distinct hormonal epochs.

Results:

Females, from puberty, are found to be at a higher risk of developing depression than males. This relative risk persists across their lifespan, especially during hormonal fluctuations. Women also show a higher prevalence of migraines and co-morbid disorders like anxiety and depression. Post-TBI, women report more cognitive and psychiatric issues, and neuroimaging research indicates thinner brain cortex in women post-injury compared to men.

Conclusions:

Women face distinct neurological and psychiatric challenges due to various exposures. Women's Neurology provides an essential lens to understand gender and sex-informed neurological care, especially considering the different hormonal phases in a woman's life. The emergence of new women’s health centers across the country signifies the importance of clinical translational research in addressing these unique challenges. WOMEN was created in October 2022 by Health Outcomes Military Exposure (HOME) to understand the impact of toxic exposure on the whole health of women veterans.
