Category: Epilepsy/Seizures

Keyword 1: psychometrics
Keyword 2: nonepileptic seizures
Keyword 3: cognitive functioning

Objective:

The aim of the study was the adaptation and initial validation of the Czech version of RBANS in sample of healthy volunteers and patients with confirmed PNES diagnosis.

Participants and Methods:

Performance of healthy volunteers (N=154; F:M 91:63; mean age 40.7 (14.6), years of schooling 15 (2.8)) was compared with the reference norms and patients with PNES (N=329; F:M 241:87; mean age 38.3 (13.1), years of schooling 12.3 (2.2)).

Results:

Statistical analysis showed that Czech healthy volunteers obtained different scores compared to reference norm in following domains: Visuospatial/Constructional (+4.5), Language (+4.8), Attention (-5.2) (p<.001 for all measures). Cognitive performance in all specific domains and RBANS Total Scale was significantly lower in PNES patients in comparison to healthy volunteers (p<0.01 for all measures).

Conclusions:

Although the sample size was relatively small for the standardization study and the Czech sample differs in some demographic characteristics that may impact results, the analysis confirmed adequate measurement properties. RBANS can be used in clinical and research studies, especially in patients with PNES and expand the repertoire of diagnostic methods available for Czech neuropsychologists.
