Neuropsychological Applications of the International Test Commission’s (ITC) Guidelines for Translating and Adapting Tests: Decision-Making Guidelines

Category: Cross Cultural Neuropsychology/ Clinical Cultural Neuroscience

Keyword 1: bilingualism/multilingualism
Keyword 2: test development
Keyword 3: multiculturalism

Objective:

Adapting the ITC guidelines for developing cross-cultural neuropsychological measures could greatly increase awareness and explicitly outline the fundamental elements of test development. This would ensure that neuropsychological measures effectively apply to individuals from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds. The objective of this presentation is to present some critical elements to consider when deciding whether to translate, adapt, or develop measures.

Participants and Methods:

Over the past few years, the Assessment Workgroup of the International Neuropsychological Society Cultural Neuropsychology Special Interest Group provided a neuropsychology Application of the existing 18 ITC guidelines, organized into six categories: Pre-condition, Test Development, Confirmation, Administration, Scoring and Interpretation, and Documentation. Proposed decision-making guidelines and a checklist were developed.

Results:

A consideration during the decision-making process that begins during the Pre-condition stages may involve reviewing test technologies (e.g., cultures prioritizing measured and thoughtful responses rather than faster approaches) and intracultural variability (e.g., difficulties encountered when designing tests in a diverse country like India) to determine whether it is best to translate and adapt existing tests versus developing a new test.

Conclusions:

The proposed Neuropsychological Applications of the International Test Commission’s (ITC) Guidelines for Translating and Adapting Tests provide benchmarks that professionals can use to evaluate the effectiveness of their adaptation processes. While there may be substantial disparities between current practices worldwide, we hope that neuropsychological test developers, translators, and adapters will find these Applications and Guidelines helpful to their work and that journal editors and peer-reviewers will find them helpful in evaluating the adequacies and accuracy of such projects. Journal editors may consider incorporating our proposed checklist throughout the peer-review process. For example, they may want to check that test adaptors/developers have explicitly documented their decision-making process and which ITC and/or other guidelines/recommendations they have adhered to.

Lastly, we recognize that as the field of neuropsychology continues to evolve, we should continue to examine and refine these proposed Applications.
